....and since x + 3x is the same as 4x, you can divide 48 by 4, to find out that x = 12.

12 ( x = 12) in one group and 36 (3 x 12) in the second, making your ratio 1:3.

Simple, if you had paid attention today in Algebra class, this homework would be a breeze.  By the way, I hope you trust that I am not scamming you, just to see you fail, OR AM I? 

you set the equation as x + 3x = 48, then solving for x , you get  x=12;  thus  3x = 36
