You could probably make sure it is going through a good sound system, so that you are enjoying all that blu-ray has to offer.

It depends on the Blu-ray manufacturer.

Try going to their website and look up the player in the help section (the instruction manual might have the info on how to do it).

There will usually be a section addressing updates.

Also, if your Blu-ray player has an ethernet port on the back, hook it up to the internet and check the menu for an update icon.
