No, a DVR does it's own recordings. You are just limited to the amount you can record and when you give the DVR back, you lose all that you recorded.

colleen - thank you and, if you would, how do I record a series using Verizon remote?
Sorry, I can't help you there. I have Cox communication and I never use the DVR. Call Verizon, they can tell you how to use the remote.
