Correct myself.. 'Play the field' meaning not to 'lock up' or as we said in my day. "going steady' with. Certainly if a guy commits to 'a' girl then he's obligated by trust to be with her and no one else. 'Play the field' meaning have fun, go out with many as you can and experience different personalities, likes and dislikes until you find that 'one' that fits.
Strange that when we go to a shoe store we can try out many shoes before we buy it, yet in searching for a soul mate, you are looked down on for trying different mates.

So go out as friends, no sex, just getting to know a girl to decide who is the one that seems most suited to you. To me, sex is something you do only with the one you commit to. That's where I was coming from in my answer.

Yeah, I know what you mean-- Guys for the most part are different, especially when young and the primal instincts are at its strongest. (Hormonal critical mass) Guys just want to 'get it on'. anywhere, anybody, anytime... As we get older though the hormones become more balanced and we simmer down and look for a life-mate- It all ends then.

Not many are going to tell you "NO, you can't have ONE girlfriend!"
The gray area becomes when you want to have multiple girlfriends simultaneously.
Personally, I don't want to be part of a harem.
