The first material item used to convey messages were flat rocks, then clay tablets and animal hides with charcoal designs, knotted cord was used for messages and accounting. Parchment is produced from animal hides that are processed into paper by elaborate and time consuming process. This and variations of parchment production are described in Wikipedia at:
