the modern systemic products are the best. These include things like Frontline, Revolution, etc. they work by being placed on skin between shoulder blades, (where dog cannot lick it off) and then it absorbs and the chemicals get into the bloodstream of the dog, when the flea or tick bites, it kills them as they drink the blood.
