Did you mean fruit flies? I've never heard of vinegar flies.

Some ways to avoid or deal with flies: keep garbage cans closed, not to throw garbage into open cans, through away rotting fruits, cover fruits bowls.

i've heard it said that if you leave a bottle of wine unfinished and uncorked for any length of time it gets vinegar fly which turns the wine bitter.  So the answer has to be to always finish the bottle! Bottoms up!!
