the autoroutes are usually the quickest and easiest but at this time of year they get clogged up with tourist traffic. I live close to Beziers and was watching reports on my local tv of traffic jams on all the mediterranean autoroutes. The French government has a wonderful system for reporting on and warning about problems, never enter an autoroute displaying a black or red warning sign, you might think again about an orange sign, you're ok if it's green. If you decide not to chance it, pick the green road signs Bison Futé which will lead you on to the 'pretty' route. They also predict probable problems on the official bison futé site
