    VOLUNTEERS

It's high time I devoted some of my way-too-much free time to doing something worthwhile, so I'm looking into various volunteer opportunities around here.
QUESTION:  Do you do any regular volunteer work?  If so, for what organization? What got you interested and what do you do to help?    If not, is volunteering something that you would consider "down the road" and in what capacity?

BOB, I was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for several years. We did a lot of volunteer work and  we held a couple of fundraisers each year. Here is a link if you would like to know more.

I am going to call Delta Delta Delta (from Animal House), maybe they need a window washer, a janitor, or just a house-uncle!

WoW! what a serenade, you are really something, thanks Country!

I volunteer at my grandsons school a couple of hours a week to help the kids with their reading.

    Bob/PKB

I volunteered endlessly when my sons were in elementary school. It is one of the best times of my life!

Bob,Yes I do.For multiple sclerosis sufferers when I can. Why? My daughter has MS.We take care of her but there are so many with no-one to help with little things like changing light bulbs.Tuning in TVs is a challenge for some of them.Even having a smoke.

    Bob/PKB

I'm so sorry to hear your daughter has MS. A friend of mine was diagnosed a couple of years back (he is 30 now). He and his GF (now wife of 1 year and a registered nurse) have a plan of attack for his disease.
They were driving to work one morning and he suddenly lost his eyesight. The diagnosis took a bit of time, but the doctors were able to treat the blindness appropriately before the damage was irreversible. He is healthy, active, a singer/song writer/guitarist, employed, and one of the nicest young men I have ever met.
You have my respect, Tommyh. You come off like a gruff old sod, but you have a heart of gold! Consider yourself hugged.
    Ann

Tommyh, I had two uncles who had MS. That was a long time ago. There are new treatments now, that were not available then.
You have a heart of gold and your daughter is so lucky to have parents like you and your wife and you even make time for others. God bless you.
    Tommyh

Thank you Bob for your kind remarks.
Ann.. My daughter is untreatable. She is now quadrapalegic & even unable to talk. It's 18 years since she was diagnosed with MS.Just bad luck she caught a particularly aggressive strain of the disease.
    Ann

Tommy, I am sorry to hear that. (hugs)
    Bob/PKB

Tommyh: your daughter is blessed to have a mom and dad who care for her; hopefully a cure and preventative will be perfected in the VERY near future. More hugs from me, too.

I AM a VOLUNTEER FOR THE  HEART FOUNDATION. COLLECT CLOTHING FROM HOUSE HOLDS WEEKLY .FURNITURE ECT, ENJOYABLE WORK .I FEEL GREAT DOING MY BIT HELPING.

Learning opportunities extend far beyond the classroom. But schools are finding it more and more difficult to bring students to museums, historical sites and cultural organizations. Field trip grants help give children these unique, firsthand learning experiences.

    They need volunteers

AISP is at least 3 hours from Fresno. I'm looking at opportunities in Fresno County. The less travel time, the more helping time.
    Ed1530

I will keep trying, But helping kids or nature is good right?
    Bob/PKB

ALWAYS! I just realized I spent hundreds of volunteer hours when my kids were in elementary school and had a positive influence much of the time.
Enjoying what you do AND helping others at the same time is "the bomb"!

I help people I know free of charge. Right now, I am depending on the goodness of others to help me get moved with my sanity intact. You've been a angel in disguise in that department.....

    Bob/PKB

Just an open heart and ears! Wish I could do more!

What happened to  your new job ? Aren't your days tied up with that ?

    Bob/PKB

mcm: Yes, I'll be working 8-5, I think, but there are furlough days. I'll have 3 weekday evenings and the weekends. I've expressed interest in a few volunteer sites already: 1 is to help repair trails in the High Sierra National Park. Another is at Habitat for Humanity warehouse (and I hope to someday help build a home). The 3rd is a literacy program for adults where I would help 1:1 to teach reading, writing, spelling, math. That would be at one of our county library branches.
I'd like to get involved with some mentoring types of activities for jr-sr high youth.
    Ann

Bob, where do you get all that energy? I used to do meals on wheels, shopping and doctor appointments for eldery people. It sure keept me busy and was very rewarding. Sadly the people I did the shopping and Dr. appointments for, passed away.
    Bob/PKB

Ann, I have been sitting around for months, getting fat and being lazy. I need to give something of myself, even if it's just a couple of hours once a week. Time to turn off the tube, close the lid on the computer (which means way less time enjoying akaQA), and living in the here and now.
I'm exhausted just thinking about it. :D

also try the SPCA, Humane Society, Audobon society, the state park thing, getting people to recycle more......

    Bob/PKB

SPCA would break me heart. They are a 3-days and you're done pound. :(

If I do volunteers I don't brag about it or I don't tell anyone, I guess that the way I feel about it.

    millie111

I don`t see it as anyone bragging?!:/..It`s great to see that people are out their doing things to help O`s..and interesting to see what they are doing!
