    what is a timing chain and how do you know when to change?

    Thanks for the question….I can just imagine driving along on a freeway when the timing chain fails….and the engine explodes into pieces as it would.

    A timing CHAIN runs the cam shaft(s)  off, off the crank shaft, it should last the life of the engine and need not be changed.


    A timing BELT does the same, but it is a service item that  will not last the life of the engine and needs to be replaced by a mechanic around every 60 or 70 thousand miles.


    Depending on the manufacture it can severely damage the engine, if it fails while the engine is running.
