      When I see a recipe that says 4-1 as in making hummingbird juice-I use 1 cup of sugar to 4 cups of water.

        It can be any measurement, like one handful and three handfuls. Use what ever measurement you want....

          1 part of one thing to 3 parts of another thing is a RATIO. It does not matter what size the parts are, as long as they are all of equal size.
