It helps tie the story together. For example, you wouldn't want a book about whales to be in space.
I for one would love a story about whales in space, sounds like a fun read, but if I didn't understand why the whales were in space, it wouldn't be nearly as good.

Often the setting is essential if the reader is to understand the story. For example, in a historical novel you need information about the period and the place: a story set in late medieval England needs historical and local colour, so that the reader doesn't wonder why most people travel on foot and so on.
