We detected a sewer gas in the basement, I checked a drain with gooseneck for draining of the condensation from the furnace and discharge water from the water softener and the gooseneck was dry. Would something be syphoning the water from this, such as a toilet flush?

I doubt it, because sewer lines have a roof vent to prevent siphoning.

It, is probably because there is not enough condensate water going into the drain to keep up with the evaporation rate.   Add some water occasionally, WBMS
