I was told that the only way to get the part id number for the instrument cluster on my ford 2003 ford focus was to pull out the instrument cluster - is it not possible to get the part id # by using the vehicle serial number?

The number on the instrument cluster is and engineering number, not the part number.

Call the parts guy at you local Ford dealer to get the part, he will know the number, since the instrument cluster is a manufacture only part.

If you wan to save money, try a salvage yard.
