    To allay the anger of, especially by making concessions; appease.

    make somebody less angry: to make somebody less angry, upset, or hostile, usually by doing or saying things to please him or her

    A lot of times, you placate someone by telling him what he wants to hear.  It doesn't mean you are going to follow through; it is just to get him to calm down, feel like he is getting what he wants.
