a check engine light is only for emissions and all of the computer related sensors and systems. fluids will only damage any electrical or electronic component. when a check engine light comes on that means that one or more sensors have failed in either the ignition, fuel, emission, spark knock, air metering system, e.t.c.      now , when the chk. eng. light flashes , it means that the engine is misfiring and that the eng. does not run on all of the cylinders. the bad part is that if you drive too long on an eng. that runs rough or misfires, the catalistic convertors will get damaged and are not very cheap. the problem may only be the spark plugs and ignition wires / or ign. coils, you should have it diagnosed properly asap to keep it from damaging the cats.good luck

Check your fluids, if they are OK, take the car to a garage and get a computer diagnostic done. That's the best way to find out what the check engine light is for.
