    What causes the universe to accelerate in expansion?

    Since the big bang the universe has been growing, but why is the rate of growth increasing?

    According to the theory, the accelleration is caused by 'dark energy' but nobody has been able to detect this, neither 'dark matter' which composes 96% of the matter in the universe.
