A dog barks in the exact same fashion as a person speaks. They expel air up from the diaphragm, through the vocal cords. The vocal cords vibrate with the onrush of air, causing sound to emit from the dog's mouth. The dog can control the force of the bark by how much air it expels through the vocal cords, just as people can control the volume of their voices.
