In most birds species, both parents share the duties of feeding the young. Depending upon what the diet of the species is, the food may just be delivered to the young and mouth fed fresh to the young. However, in some species, the feed must first be semi-digested and then regurgitated to the young as product more useful to their underdeveloped digestive tract. Pigeons for example make "pigeon milk" which is what the semi-digested seeds are called as they are mouth fed to the young chicks. This may be very temporary for some species and later the chicks get freshly harvested feed directly mouth fed as they are older.
