Gear oil usually goes in the rear end (the round part in the center of the rear axle), there is usually a plug in the back or side about half way up. You fill it up to that point. The viscosity is usually at least 90-115. Gear oil is usually fairly thick syrupy looking stuff.
In regards to the transmission, you first want to make absolutely sure you are putting in what is supposed to be going in there. I say that, as some GM transmissions have been known to require lighter grades of oil, depending on the particular type of transmission. There is usually a plug on the side of the transmission to where you fill it to that level. It is typically found on the driver's side of the vehicle.
