Depends. If it is a wireless controller, you need the wireless gaming receiver to use it on a PC.

Note: you cannot play using a play and charge cable to connect a wireless controller. It will download a driver, but all it will do is charge your controllers battery. It will not detect it as a controller itself.
If it is a wired controller, then it's 'plug and play' and will download the driver automatically.
