The Andes Mountains were formed from volcanism and uplift created by the collision of the Nazca plate with the South American plate.

My son is in the mountains

Las Bambas in the Andes on a gigantic mining project. 14,500 feet elevation and it takes 9 hours to drive in with 4-wheel drive. He has to stop several times to get used to the elevation. Right now the Peruvians are striking and in this isolated spot he and the the other workers are running low on food and water. The police force is there to protect them.  He had a chance to leave when the majority left but he says, "I'll go down with the ship." He has a good job of ordering mining supplies. Unfortunately, he does not speak Spanish and 95% of the other people do. He has an interpreter but that's not the same.
