Your air filter is a big one in determining how effectively your gas combusts in the engine. I'd also consider the fuel filter if changing the air filter doesn't help. Every vehicle has been subjected to different conditions, so it is really a matter of systematically going through things to find out what's wrong. I'm surprised that the air filter wasn't the first thing to be checked or changed.
