    Because boxers used to fight in a circle drawn on the floor, called the ring. This name stuck On even after the boxing ring became a square...

    When boxing got started, fighters boxed inside a "ring" of people, but then led to a "ring' by using 4 stakes roped off, which became a square "ring".
