Does  the mower have a two-stroke ( two-cycle US) motor? If so, you must add two-stroke oil to the petrol ( gas US) in the proportions recommended by the manufacturer.

If the engine is 4-stroke, the oil should be added to the sump. Use an oil recommended by the manufacturer. Never use regular sump oil in a two-stroke and never use two-stroke oil as sump oil.

You don't add oil to a lawn mower.  see your owners manual as most and that only 1% of lawnmoweres use oil.  And most of them are oil injected.

Run your mower without oil in the sump and you will need to buy a new one.
