In the case of drum brakes, with a Brake Tool by removing the hole cover
In the case of rotors, with a wrench.
Although every car today has automatically adjusted brakes, if one does not brake in reverse, often enough, the rear brake do not get adjusted often enough.
The front brakes do the majority of braking, because of the laws of physics, they will wear more quickly if the rear brakes are not fully engaged.
A good service facility will always check the adjustment with every oil change or service.
If you are getting a lot of brake dust on your front wheels, it is likely that your rears are out of adjustment.
