Perhaps because our priorities are screwed up and our electoral system is severely broken. :)

Actually we have two major parties from which to chose but there are up to twelve or more others on the ballot in many states..
Communistst, Constitution Party, Green Party, Libertarian Party, Independents, Boston Tea Party, New American Independent Party, Party for Socialism and Liberation arty Liberation Party Prohibition Party, Reform Party, Socialist Party USA, Socialist Workers Party and Independence Party, Constitution Party to name a few.
Those candidates who receive fewer than 5% of the votes cast, generally not listed on the final returns, nor are write-in candidates who receive fewer that 1%, listed.

The problem with third parties in the past was the leader of the two major parties in Pre-election poling, LOST the election. ;(
Ross Perot put Clinton in office, for example with less than 50% of the votes cast .
The Bull Moose Party with Teddy Roosevelt got into the race, split the Republican voters during the election and enabled Woodrow Wilson, the Liberal Democrat, to be elected President. Wilson, a "Progressive," became one of the few, "minority" Presidents who did not get more than 50 %
