    I live in Granite Bay Ca. And we had a freeze

       I just found the naswer to this in abook I was reading  you go out take a firm grip on the main stem and tug gently  if it resists it means there is still life  it may take time to comeback but stick with it If it comes loose I guess you have your ansewr...

        here in Australia it's nearly impossible to kill it!  It thrives on neglect so don't be too kind to it.If it is really dead it will be brown & brittle.Watch out for the thorns when they turn brittle,they can be treacherous.BTW... varigated bouganvillia is poisonnous.Take care.

          i live in the u k and the only place we can really grow them is in a glasshouse but the way to test them is to make a cut on one of the branches and see if the inside is still green if so you may be in luck.

            I chopped mine down recently.  Too much of a nuisance and thorny.
