At mid-morning Thursday, in the conference room in the depths of Yankee Stadium, Joe Girardi was conducting his daily media briefing, discussing all the various scenarios - doubleheaders stacked upon doubleheaders - that are likely to result from Hurricane Irene. Sitting by himself in the back of the room, Yankee broadcaster Ken Singleton - his arms outstretched over the empty chairs on each of side of him - stared into space.

It had been a little more than 15 hours since Singleton had learned of the death at 59 of his close friend, neighbor and former Baltimore Orioles teammate, Mike Flanagan, but details of what happened and why in the back woods of the 15000 block of York Road in Sparks, Md., where Flanagan's body was found late Wednesday afternoon, were still coming in.
