My first suggestion is to do some research about the college or university...So you know what majors or schools are available and if any of them are well known for a particular major.  Also research any sports you are interested and what division the sports are played in.  All of this can be done on the web.  Your Guidance Counselor might be able to give you information too.

Call before you go to the college and ask for a tour to be set up.  Also ask to speak for an informational interview.  If you know what you are interested in ask to speak With a Proffesor or the dean of that school.  Also ask to speak to the coach of any sport you are interested in.  See if you can sit in on a class (If you are interested in Biology see what Bio 101 is like...and talk to a prof. in Bio...to see if your interests fit into their program).

Some general questions may be:  I would like to live on campus do you have enough housing for all 4 years???  If not, for at least Freshman year?  Can I bring my car?  How do you match roommates?  Is there a campus shuttle bus?  Do you offer meal plans?  Do you have work/study programs?

For your major interest:  I see I could have a Bio. major in Mammology.  Do you help students get internships during the year or in the summer at Zoos?  Where else?  Where do your Bio/Mammology students work after college??  Do you think I will need a Masters deg. or doctorate to work at a Zoo?

For sports:  I have played Varsity tennis for a year and plan to play my senior year.  How do you recruit your tennis players?  Could I play JV if I'm not selected for Varsity???  I see that you are in the XXX league.  What schools do you play against???
