I use Vaseline to seal moisture into moist skin. Lotion just doesn't seem to do the job. Without Vaseline the skin around my fingernails cracks. I think I wash my hands with soap too often to keep oil there.
Drink the appropriate amount of water and use moisturizers. Two of the best times to put on lotion is right after a shower/bath and just before going to bed.
The best thing to do, is to buy soaps with moisturizer in them, or little to no fragrance. This will keep the skin from drying out irregularly. Also you can use baby wash in replace of your body wash, witch will kelp soften dry cracked skin. I would also recommend aveeno lotion or johnson's lotion. Use either lotion after bath or shower, and it will keep your skin hydrated up to 24 hours (or is said to), however if it fails to do so, just apply when needed.
