MISUSE OF INTERNET
Internet is known as a global network of interconnected computer enabling users to share information along multiple channels or in a simple word; internet is a peer-to-peer system. We can get all kinds of information we need with just a click. This is the reason that many students literally spend hours surfing the net. However, nowadays most of the students tend to misuse the internet than to get the latest information from the network.
Some students will misuse the internet by surfing the pornography websites. Students are too young to differentiate good and bad websites so that they may get inappropriate knowledge from the websites. Their high curiosity causes them to surf for various websites. Another way of misuse of internet is students wasting time on online chatting. Students can chat with their friends for a long period of time because online chatting is not very costly. So, they may spend a whole day on chatting and they are unable to use their free time wisely. Students may misuse the internet by downloading files illegally too. As an example, students will surf several websites to search for the latest news or other information. As a result, they will download songs or videos illegally because they want to gain these files without spending lots of money.
Another negative effect of the intended usage is its blogging activities. Blogging gives the freedom of speech as the bloggers can express what they thought and experienced to the sites. They can simply do so by writing and posting their articles on the net. It is actually as easy as ABC. Meanwhile, the materials posted would not be filtered by anybody else. Thus, if the blogs contain negative issues or information about the country, it may affect the stability of the country’s politics or economic sector as well as damaging one’s reputation. For examples, if a false negative news was to be made about our countrys' financial status and the news was spread to every part of the globe, it will definitely bizarre(?) our country as leaders of other countries may believe the news and lose confidence towards our country. Thus, the authorities should be stricter by implementing heavier punishments to bloggers that post false information that may jeopardize the country and nation like fine them with a bigger sum of money or a longer period of jailing.
Besides that, online games like Maple Story, Cabal, and Dota which are empowering the people especially teenager’s mind too bring disadvantages. Though some online games can be played for free but it may cause addiction to the people. As they get addicted, they will keep on playing the games, hence increasing the electricity bills which may add to their parents' burden. Furthermore, the addiction of online games will prevent students from carrying out other more beneficial activities like exercising, studying or doing chores. They don’t even concentrate on lessons in class as in their mind, they only think of strategies to pass to the next levels. Some students even tend to skip school just to stay at home or internet cafes to play the online games. Worst of all, the online games will gradually take over the role of traditional games which are the valuable cultures heritage in Malay society. Thus, parents should play their parenting roles more effectively by allocating a smaller portion of time for their children to be online and always monitor the contents of what they are surfing.
Misusing the internet by surfing various websites may cause viruses to infect the computer. Once a virus infects a computer, it is very difficult to get rid of it. The computer will have to be sent for reformatting because sooner or later the virus will damage the hard disks or motherboard. When it comes to that time, the students will have to spend money to repair the computer.
To stop all these case of misusing internet, the internet service provider should impose a law or rules and regulations of usage of internet to all the internet users. Besides, it should be very strict and the punishments and fines should be very heavy too. Internet service providers can hire some software engineers to invent or perhaps derive a security system that is able to prevent any misuse of internet happen. All the internet users shall register themselves, then only they can use the services.
From all the above, there is nothing wrong if students surf the net to while away an idle homework, for fun or for relaxation. However, something is seriously wrong when a student is addicted to net surfing without purpose for whole days and nights to the exclusion of other activities.
