ap-per-tain-ing. Break each sound (syllable) i.e. each vowel and sandwich it between consonants. "ai" is a tied sound, and there are several like that "ea" for example is a tied sound as in beach, (pronounced ee). For words that start with a vowel (a,e,i,o, u and mute (silent) "H", and if followed by double consonants, the sound is always a short sound. Now if I give you a clue, it takes away my income by USD 1000, so I will stop here :).
