Airlines make it grotty, you have to go to the booking office and get the cancellation done, they do not accept cancellations over the phone, last I knew .. daughter January this year returning to Denmark. Sri Lankan airways; wanted to stay on a couple of days and she was wait listed because the flights were full. Wait-listing means that you are on call, if a seat becomes available you get the flight otherwise you don't. The same thing happens to wives of airline ground or air crew. My friend had to go to the airport on three days and was turned away because the booked passenger turned up, and they are not compassionate either, the mother had two little girls, 3 and 7.
