Three sides in water, one side connected to the mainland.

Sri Lanka was said to have been a peninsula of the Indian Continent, therefore interfered with over the centuries. When the land mass finally separated, we became independent of both. :). Now our peninsula has become an island, there are other small islands which are also connected to the mainland, but the difference between the peninsula and the island is that there is a constant connection between the mainland and the peninsula. Even if when the tide is down and you can walk across to the island, because it has water in between the mainland and he island, it remains an island.
