      You can start with  an internet search for "cheap Manhattan apartments". Lots of listings. New Yorkers are like people in lots of places...smart, stupid, snobby, "down-to-earth," compassionate, nasty, indifferent.There are lots of people in "your boat." Don't "sweat it." You'll be fine, if you decide to come.

        You'd have to get a roomate or two. As  you said, the rent in Manhattan is very high......unless you get some 6th floor walk-up with no hot water.

          Why Manhattan? Brooklyn and the Bronx are cheaper.
