I have heard they are called coppers because thier badges were made of copper, and the name cop came from the first letter of each word  "Constable   On   Patrol".

Cop the noun is almost certainly a shortening of copper, which in turn derives from cop the verb.

The word "cop" is an old Anglo-Saxon verb for catch, grab or capture, dating back at least to the 1100s.

Look at this if you,ve got an hour or so to spare.

Romos, i had alook, it seems every state, county, provice have their own terminology for the police, intereasting.

I, too, heard that their badges were originally made of copper..............

"Fuzz" originated in the U.S. in the 1920s.It's based on the criminal slang term "fuzzy," meaning "unmanly, incompetent and soft."
