      Consumer is the purchaser or user of the goods and services produced and sold domestically or internationally.  For example, mom, a consumer, goes to the store to buy an I-Phone for her daughter.  Mom doesn't have to use the product herself necessarily.  Why?  There's another person called the "influencer".   Her daughter, the influencer, basically dictates to the mother what to buy.  Hence, clever marketers appeal the the target market, the child, directly.

        Umbriel is correct, I also believe our "clients" (in an institution) are also consumers, as they purchase a service in way of foregoing part of their pension and in return receive the care they require
