I have been diagnosed with this myself. COPD, as I understand it, is a general term used to describe several conditions such as, emphysema, bronchitis, or asthma, or any combination of them, that impedes an individuals ability to breath.
I am not one with any medical background, so that is a very basic explanation of it, as I understand it.
