What jhharlan said is the achronym for UFO.
Years ago, someone saw something flying or hovering in the sky and didn't know what it was. It was an unidentified (no one knew what it was) flying (cuz it was in the sky) object (thing).
Superman could have been called a UFO, until people saw he was a flying man. Then he wasn't a UFO anymore.
