    A few reasons,  first off its called a 'punt'. where that name comes from I have no idea, however, the accepted reasoning is for stacking during aging, as the bottles are laid on their sides to keep the cork moist, other bottle necks can be inserted in its space making more room.


    Another reason is it gives the bottle more stability as olden days wine bottles were not as strong-


    Another reason is it give sediment a place to settle.. although none of these reasons are exact, they are accepted and now its traditional bottle making.
