Skype is free when you use it to talk Skype to Skype (over the internet). If however you want to use it like a phone to call a landline or mobile phone (Internet to phone) then you need to buy credit to pay for the call (like a prepaid mobile phone credit). Using Skyke to call family and friends is often cheaper than a landline or mobile phone - especially if you are calling overseas.
