It's all about politics and money---like everything else. If an actor is popular and well-liked, chances are he'll / she'll be nominated. I find that the rauchier the movie is, the more likely it'll be nominated. They don't nominate or vote in good, clean , meaningful movies anymore.......like The Ten Commandments, or Chariots of Fire. Most movies that win nowdays are rated R and are about a subject that is contraversial and dear to the hearts of the academy---such as Brokeback mountain was about gay cowboys.
