A "long" sound of the vowel is when you hear the "name" of it in the word.  In the list you gave, I only hear "O" in BOLD.
    For "A":    SAME
    For "E"     EGO
    For "I"       Icon
    For "U"     Use

    fishel1111

But none of these words, (including bold which has the long-vowel symbol above the o) sound like long o as in no. For dog- the dictionary has an upside-down u above the o. But what does that mean- long or short?

fishel1111 Bold and No have the same vowel sound. Elongate the O as you say each word.

short. except for the O in bold....that  O is long O.

     I used to teach phonics.

The O in these words is (short).Good luck and have a great day!!!!!!!

    Except for the word "bold"...long.

You guys are psychic!! I had no idea what the Q was about- lol!

All depends on the English language spoken.

Bold has a long vowel sound, the rest are short.
