If it is tapping when you first start up,especially in the morning then you have a worn valve lifter.This noise will normally disappear when the oil pump has filled all of the galleries or when the lifter has rotated a little bit.Don't panic.I have known cars to be driven for 20 years with this noise.But do take it to a mechanic for his opinion & diagnosis.I can't say for certain that this is the noise without actually hearing the engine run.But that's what usually causes a tapping noise.
