Don`t quote me but somewhere in the back of my befuddled brain I believe a "lighter" was a barge used to convey goods to or from ships on the Thames and the man who paddled the barge was called a Lighterman.

Road name reveals the maritime history of the area, although anyone remotely answering to the description of a lighterman has long since gone. Isle of Dogs, London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
