Well quite the surprise for me last night...........

I have a pair of parakeets. The female has been laying eggs for months now. I was leaving the eggs with her figuring the male was too young to breed her and the eggs would be duds. I don't like when the females lay eggs because 1) it's such a drain on them and 2) there's always a risk they can become egg bound and die. Leaving the eggs keeps them from laying more for a while. So on the last clutch, I did the same as always and left the eggs. Well last night I was putting the dogs outside and I thought I heard peep, peep, peep, coming from the parakeet's cage. I never expected to see this little one though. He/she was actually under the barred cage floor in the dropping tray as he/she had fallen through the divider between cage and drop tray. It's momma was over it trying to cover it to keep it warm. She had her body pressed down into the divider trying to get to him/her.  So, I got him/her out and into  a box and put  the rest of the eggs into it. He's/she's doing good today and she  is being an excellent momma. It took daddy a little bit to understand what the pink peeping thing was but now he's settling in and has become protective over the box with momma and baby in it. He was even feeding momma earlier so she did not have to leave the baby. It's amazing to see how fast instinct has kicked in for these birds who are parents for the first time. Most especially the male who is only about 7 or 8 months old I'm guessing. Still can't believe he was old enough for this. If it turns out that no other chicks hatch, I'm calling this one Solo. : )

My dogs know not the bother the birds. Digger was very curious about the baby's peeping but I told him to "leave it" and he hasn't checked the cage out again.

You people on the other side of the pond call them budgies, we call them parakeets because we are rebels! We have to have our own names and words for things, lol

Ah Colleen I think you have the correct name for them I blame it on the Aussies! haaa oxoxox

When I read about Parakeets in books, they're all called Budgies. That's short for Budgerigar.

Brilliant pictures. That was touching about the mama bird being such a good mama. We had 3 parakeets, but not all at the same time. The last one was so precious that my dad cried when he died. His name was Opie. He could say 8 phrases. I'd get a parakeet if I didn't have my cats.

Colleen- I doo believe you are a long lost cousin!!! Colleen, the Queen, Doolittle!!!  Now, when shall we begin teaching you to speak parakeet?

It's doesn't take long to clean them. The drop pans all slide put and I have a mini shop vac to clean the pans. Their droppings do not stick to sheet metal like it does to other stuff so an old mop and some cleaning solution makes short work of it once I vacuum up the lose stuff. When the weather is warmer, I can roll them out to the deck and hose the cages down. This handles the messes I can't get to. Through the winter, I just do my best with a long handled bristle broom to knock down the stuff on the piping (PVC framework). Quick sweep on the floor in the morning and evening and it keeps things neat. None of the cleaning takes long at all. ;)

It's anyone's guess now. I do not think he/she will have as much blue though. That's a beautiful budgie. Is it yours?

Colleen No got it off the internet my budgie when I was a child was green I was looking at Mom and her colourings are very unusual! is she a rare breed! oxox

Wow, your a grandma, congratulations! Very cute, you may want to build or buy them a breeding box now huh? I believe you are only supposed to put it on the cage a certain time of year. My cockatels had many clutches of eggs and few survived to adulthood. It's great to have your buddies making more budgies for you.

dont let those screach owls find them
