      A USB 'stick' is simply a memory drive. Use it like you would your hard drive - Save to it, read from it, back up to it restore to it. A great way to transport large amounts of data without dragging your laptop with you.. (assuming the destination has a computer you can plug it into.  There are many uses for them, my TV even has a slot (usb) to transfer digital pictures - Newer cars have them to transfer music, its endless..
