Under Koranic rules you are not allowed to earn interest on investments or charge interest on loans. Presumably dividends are treated similarly.

The type of investment that is appropriate for an individual is predicated upon a few things: Risk tolerance, time available for an investment or age, targeted rate of return, and market condition.  You cannot just label an old man suitable just for investment meant for income and a young investor investing in the riskier stocks.  Everybody is different, therefore, it's best to profile each individual for suitability first.
