When I was in elementary school, we had sports teams that competed against some of the other elementary schools. For each sport, there were two boys' teams and two girls' teams. One was called the "a" team and generally had the older and/or more competent athletes. The second team was the "b" team and generally had the younger athletes.
Based on this experience, I would say "a girls" is the older and/or morecompetent girls' athletic team from my elementary school days.
